Spartan-6 is manufactured on a 45nm process and was introduced in 2009. Xilinx has been reducing production since 2018, though some part numbers are not formally declared EOL. In practice, finding Spartan-6 through official channels is increasingly difficult. The greatest shortage affects commercial (C) and industrial (I) temperature grades.

For some designs, migration to Spartan-7 or Artix-7 is possible. Spartan-7 (see Artix-7) offers better performance at comparable cost. However, replacement requires: pin-compatibility analysis, project adaptation in Vivado (Spartan-6 used ISE), and re-testing. When migration isn't feasible, purchasing original Spartan-6 through independent channels is the only viable path.
Spartan-6 is offered in three temperature grades: C (Commercial, 0°C — +85°C), I (Industrial, -40°C — +100°C), and Q (Extended, -40°C — +125°C). Industrial grade (I) is the most popular for industrial automation and telecommunications. When migrating within the series, package compatibility matters: for example, XC6SLX9 in CPG196 has 106 user I/O pins, while XC6SLX9 in FTG256 has 160. Different logic capacity models may use different packages with the same pin count — a critical factor for BOM optimization.
