Lattice ECP5 vs iCE40: FPGA Selection Guide

Lattice Semiconductor offers two popular FPGA families with open-source toolchain support: ECP5 for mid-range projects and iCE40 for small, power-efficient applications.

Lattice iCE40

The iCE40 series features ultra-low-power FPGAs with open-source toolchain support (IceStorm). Models from iCE40LP to iCE40 UltraPlus. Ideal for portable devices, IoT and simple interfaces.

Lattice ECP5

ECP5 is a mid-range series with DDR3, SERDES and DSP block support. Models from 12K to 85K logic elements. Suitable for image processing, PCIe and Ethernet interfaces. Open-source toolchain: Yosys + nextpnr.

Recommendation

iCE40 for simple and power-efficient projects. ECP5 for tasks requiring more logic capacity and high-speed interfaces.
